Ukraine has shown strong interest and commitment in further contributions towards the reconstruction of the Ajaokuta Steel Plant, in Kogi State. According to the Ukraine Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr Valerii Aleksandruk, who spoke to members of the media in an interactive session in Abuja, noted that Ukrainian experts were ready to take part in the project. “I know that a number of Ukrainian specialists already successfully work on this project on the spot, despite having some problems with their wage and difficulties with their working permits. We count on the support of this important project for the Nigerian economy,” he said.
The Ambassador further expressed delight at the potential of Ukraine-Nigeria bilateral relations in economic areas which he called promising. Also in the pipeline between both countries are further strengthening of relations and signing of agreements in the area of agriculture, mining, renewable energy, infrastructure, politics, security, trade and investments.
The country is also interested in developing relations with the West African Region through the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) examining the possibilities of creating the Free Trade Area with the ECOWAS, and seeks Nigeria’s support for this initiative. Presently, Nigeria is considered one of the major commercial partners of Ukraine in the whole of Sub-Saharan Africa.
