A trip to her parent’s home land, Guyana, inspired Anaya Lee Willabus to write her own story. She was just 8 when her book, The Day Mohan Found His Confidence, was published last year, making her the youngest chapter book author in the history of the United States.
Other young people have published comics and picture books, but what makes her book different is that it is intended for readers ages 7-10. The brief 46 pages of her book are primarily made up of text as opposed to leaning on illustrations for textual understanding.
In a recent interview with PIX11, she said about her accomplishments, “It’s just so inspirational, not only for me, but for other kids and that’s good.”
Willabus’ parents said she and her siblings have been reading since they were even able to articulate words. Of the 300 books in their home, her mother said Anaya has read all of them.
“I don’t exactly have a favorite book. I did enjoy reading I am Malala, Dreams From My Father and also Fire from the Rock,” she said.
The poised student said that she wants to be a teacher and continue in her career as an author when she grows up.
