It was possibly the most highly anticipated moments of this year’s Grammy Award

The music awards show’s darling was set to return to the stage triumphant after a four-year hiatus, and the world was fully expecting to be blown away by one of her powerful new ballads.

But Adele’s performance failed to meet fans’ lofty expectations. In fact, critics have lambasted her performance as flat and out of tune.

Her rendition of All I Ask was nearly totally ruined by by sound problems, including distracting noises and twangs, which sounded as though someone tuning a guitar had been mistakenly plugged in to the system.

In fact when Justin Bieber — who had just won his first-ever Grammy — took the stage next to perform an acoustic version of his hit Love Yourself  on guitar, some Twitter users wondered whether the instrument had been plugged in while he was awaiting his turn in the wings.

Judging by her facial expressions, the 25-year-old was clearly well aware that things were not as they should be.

But Adele took to Twitter to explain the disruption with a rare, and candid, tweet.

“The piano mics fell on to the piano strings, that’s what the guitar sound was,” she simply said.

“It made it sound out of tune. S*** happens.”

Academy President Neil Portnow said that the show switched to a backup sound system during the Hello singer’s performance, which caused the audio to drop for a few seconds as she began her song.

The star-studded evening was somewhat overshadowed by technical issues.

Justin Bieber suffered glitches of his own during Where Are U Now, while one of the night’s biggest winners Taylor Swift got teary-eyed after missing a note during her performance of Out Of The Woods.
