Right now “According To X” feels like old material. The songs are pop, and with each passing day, as new content gets released all around the country, those songs become more stale.
In 2015, DJ Xclusive ran around the industry, creating a new album which contained party tracks from different movements in the industry.
That album, “According To X,” contained hit tracks ‘Tonight’featuring Banky W and Niyola, ‘Pangolo’ featuring Timaya, and ‘Jeje’ featuring Wizkid. It was a party album, with Afro-Pop being its core genre of concentration, with sprinklings of Hip-hop, EDM and Afrobeat.
Released in September 2015, “According To X” hit the streets, with some of the songs playing a strong role in still keeping the name of DJ Xclusive relevant beyond the clubs and parties, and into the hearts of millions of Nigerians who will never get the opportunity to see the disc jockey work a crowd.
The DJ understands the importance of independent hit songs and high-budget videos and how it increases the stock of DJs. A hit song in Nigeria just needs your name attached to it to give renewed relevance anytime it comes on. DJ Xclusive has had a bunch of these put his name on. And it also does help that he is pleasing on the eyes, gaining him huge traction in the female fan department.
“According To X” has a number of songs designed to be hit songs in their right. Songs such as ‘Alhaji’, ‘Oyoyo’, ‘Wo le’, ‘Da mi si’, and ‘Cash only’, and ‘Gal bad’, are all worthy of slamming down the clubs. But for some reason, they aren’t.
Apart from ‘Gal bad’, all the other songs have been given the video treatment. They all have shiny visuals which are being rotated on international TV. Yesterday (March 14, 2016), he dropped the video for the quasi-Arabic song, ‘Alhaji’, featuring Tiwa Savage, Reekado Banks and Trafic. A decent video with all the right setup and props, he is set to do what he has done with the other videos. Lather, rinse, repeat.
But how long can you milk an album? How long can you reset and repeat the same motions for every song, hoping that one sticks?
DJ Xclusive album failed in one regard. It is a pop album, and with Nigeria experiencing intense competition, pop songs really do not last long. Right now “According To X” feels like old material. The songs are pop, and with each passing day, as new content gets released all around the country, those songs become more stale.
The time is right for Xclusive to give us a new sound. He has the access to the stars, the funding to pull it off, and the talent to get it to blow. It’s time for “According To X” to become history.
