To increase awareness about early diagnosis of diabetes, Novo Nordisk, a leading insulin manufacturing pharmaceutical company, has said that 42,000 Nigerians will benefit from its free screening programme.

The company’s General Manager for Middle Africa, Mr. Venkat Kalyan, made this known in a statement on behalf of the organisation on Sunday.

He added that 500,000 Nigerians would be captured under its Base of the Pyramid project in collaboration with the Roche Diabetes Care.

According to him, the exercise, which aims to increase Nigerians access to early diagnosis and proper management of the disease will be implemented in seven of its Diabetes Support Centres  in Lagos, Ondo and Edo states  in the next three months.

Kalyan stated, “The BoP project is to address the challenges in access to diabetes care and treatment. It will also attempt to identify solutions that would lead to an integrated approach to diagnosis, treatment and diabetes control for the working poor. This is approximately an income level of N25,000 to N50,000 per month.

“It will be implemented in our Diabetes Support Centres, which are located in towns and cities where diabetes prevalence is  higher. Our target audience includes people who are currently experiencing the classic symptoms of diabetes and people who are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

“The centres can play a role in reducing the burden on over-crowded general hospitals as patients are referred to the centre for personalised care. Over time, emergencies due to diabetes complications are reduced through better management of diabetes.”
