The desire for continuity, and accountability in governance had been given as reasons why Governor Adams Oshiomhole may have settled for Godwin Obaseki as preferred candidate in the forthcoming gubernatorial election in September.
Rev. Michael Egharevba, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo South senatorial district made this assertion while speaking with newsmen in Benin City, Edo State capital ahead of the party’s primary and described those jostling to succeed Governor Oshiomhole by dragging the highly reverend Benin palace into the race as fettish.
According to him, the governor’s interest should not be misconstrued for imposition, adding that like every other delegate, Oshiomhole has a right to choose a preferred candidate.
‘’The continuity we want is progressive continuity and not redundant one, not a desire to be governor by all means. History has shown that those who are desperate about governorship never get it. Obaseki just came and he has been with us. We now need a better reason to fill the golden shoes that Oshiomhole is leaving. We don’t cast aspersion because we are all in the same party, Obaseki can do the job and after eight years any other person can come’’
‘’Obaseki is prudent and knows the inner setting of Edo administration. If another Obaseki come in the next world we will choose him. Where other states are getting moribund financially, Edo is state working.’’
He however allayed fears that the would be PDP gubernatorial flagbearer, Pastor Ize Iyamu remains a stumbling block in the drive to realising the Obaseki project come September.
‘’If wishes were horse, beggars will want to take a ride. PDP is an organisation that is moribund. In eight years there is nothing the PDP can show for it. Edo State is now an eldorado because there is no ugly site in the state that Oshiomhole has not touched so whatever PDP is saying we don’t care about them’.’
