Malawi’s Former Ruling Peoples Party Slammed Over Ill-Treatment Of Joyce Banda

Malawi’s former ruling Peoples Party (PP) Mutharika has slammed President Peter Mutharika over his alleged ill-treatment of the country’s former leader Joyce Banda.

PP’s South Africa Chapter claimed that Banda had not received her salary and other benefits since she left office in 2014.

According to Nyasa Times, Humphrey Mhlango, the president of the chapter, accused Mutharika of not honouring the promise he made to respect the country’s constitution.

Under the country’s constitution, a former head of state is entitled to a monthly salary and other benefits.

The spokesperson in the office of the former head of state, Andekuche Chanthunya, confirmed that Banda had not been receiving her salary and benefits.

However, Information Minister Jappie Mhlango denied PP’s claims, saying Banda had remained on government payroll and that she was receiving all her benefits. Mhlango added however, that Banda had refused some of her benefits like a government home.

Banda left Malawi after she lost to Mutharika in the controversial May 2014 election. She has not been back in the southern African country since.

Chanthunya said the party would issue a statement when Banda returns to the country.
