Zimbabwe is on the brink of becoming worse than South Africa in terms of crime rate due to over a 1 000 criminals whose sentences we reportedly cut off by the South African correctional services after the countries’ government declared a forced amnesty to Zimbabwean prisoners who had committed different crimes in South Africa.
Early this year it was reported that hundreds of Zimbabwean ex-convicts were released by the South African correctional services department and deported. More than a thousand ex-convicts were deported in batches to Zimbabwe via the Beitbridge boarder post. The exercise is on-going as thousands more are expected. The ex-convicts are handed over to the Zimbabwe Republic Police for vetting as some would had run away from the long arm of the law in Zimbabwe to South Africa where old habits were then hard to get rid of.
Mr Mukonoweshuro of the Console General said this exercise saw ex criminals who had been charged with various crimes including murder, theft and robbery. “These people were sentenced for durations ranging from 1 month to 18 years”
The government of Zimbabwe has been quiet about this exercise and its believed that South Africa is forcibly releasing these inmates from their prisons as they are ballooning their countries expenditure. According to a source in the national police ZRP, the crime rate has risen in the past few months with murder topping the list.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police is also doing an exercise to educate people not to offer transport to strangers and of concern is the facet that they are actually mentioning the presence of the criminals recently released from South Africa. Efforts to get a comment from the ZRP national spokesperson Charity Charamba were fruitless as her phone went unanswered.
