FG: Blackout Looms Over Rejection Of Electricity Tariff

The Federal Government has warned of an impending power blackout over the protest and rejection of the increase in electricity tariff, Sunnewsonline reports.

Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola, stated this on the sidelines of the 2nd Monthly Sectoral Meeting of Power Sector Operators in Lagos on Monday.

Fashola’s comment came just as the Nigeria Labour Congress the Trade Union Congress and affiliated unions held nationwide protest against the tariff hike of 45 per cent.

He said a cost reflective tariff sanctioned by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), will encourage banks to lend to would be and existing players to expand their network and provide other infrastructure.

He said he wondered why the past administration of Goodluck Jonathan did not put in place a cost reflective tariff, insisting that what NERC has done with the latest MYTO was to design a 10-year tariff plan, which would begin to drop after the second year.

He said electricity distributed through the grid system, is far more cheaper than running on self power generation using diesel, petrol or inverters.

The Nigeria Labour Congress has threatened to embark on a more aggressive nationwide protest against the 45 percent increase in electricity tariff by the federal government.
