The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested another serving officer and former Director of Military Intelligence, Major General Wiwa in continuation of investigations into the disbursement of the $2.1 billion arms fraud.
General Wiwa, the Deputy Commandant at the Armed Forces Resettlement Centre was arrested on Sunday in Lagos and has been transferred to Abuja, where he is currently being detained.
Wiwa, younger brother to late Ken Saro-Wiwa, the late Ogoni rights activists’ who was executed by the Abacha’s government in connection with the Ogoni crises of the 1990’s, served in the office of the National Security Adviser when late General Patrick Azazi occupied the office.
He remained in office during Col. Sambo Dasuki’s tenure from where he was appointed Director of Military Intelligence when Lt. General Azubuike Ihejirika became the Chief of Army staff, a position he retained under the tenure of General Kenneth Minimah.
Sources at the EFCC said Wiwa was picked up for questioning over the involvement of the former Chief of Army Staff in the arms purchase scandal.
Last Friday, Army authorities confirmed that 12 Army officers, including serving and retired, had been sent to the EFCC for investigation.
