A pressure group in Edo State, Edo For Good Governance (EGG), has condemned the impeachment of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Victor Edoror and his deputy, alleging that the removal of the two lawmakers was targeted at the governorship ambition of the state deputy governor, Dr Pius Odubu.
The group in a statement signed by its state coordinator, Comrade John Ogbeide, a copy of which was made available to LEADERSHIP yesterday, said the events in the State Assembly were continuation of the plot to eliminate the deputy governor from the race.
“We members of Edo For Good Governance (EGG) condemn in strong terms the so-called impeachment of Edo speaker and deputy today as a continuation of the plot to eliminate Edo deputy governor, Dr Pius Odubu, who has indicated interest in the governorship ticket of All Progressives Congress (APC).
“It is open secret that all attempts to make Dr Odubu give up his resolve to vie for the ticket had failed.
“It is quite pathetic that few days after the deputy governor narrowly escaped being assassinated in Auchi – an attack in which his DSS bodyguard and police escort commander sustained serious gun wounds – these anti-democratic forces have now shifted their weapons to the Edo State House of Assembly in utter contempt for the cultural sensibilities of Bini nation and indeed entire Edo people who are still mourning the death of our great king, Oba Erediuauwa,” Ogbeide said.
The group noted that it was curious that the impeachments were coming less than two weeks after the Assembly, in exercise of its independence, disagreed with the governor over the dissolution of local councils in the state.
“We understand huge sums of money exchanged hands to effect this regime change against the principled leadership offered by Honorable Victor Edoror who, until now, had stubbornly refused monetary inducements to entertain impeachment proceedings against an innocent man, Dr. Odubu.
