Labour Party (LP) on Tuesday protested its exclusion by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from the February 20 Senatorial re-run election in Kogi-East, reports Daily Trust.

National Chairman of the party, Abdulkadir Abdulsalam, said the protest against INEC became necessary in order to avoid nullification of the election after its conduct.

Abdulsalam said the December 2015 Appeal Court ruling that nullify the election of Senator Abdulrahman Abubakar did not affect LP as their own case was not substitution, but outright replacement.

He insisted that INEC cannot deny the party its lawful right of fielding a candidate within the stipulated time-frame, adding that the commission cannot force someone not to go to his or her party of choice

He stated that the party has duly replaced its candidate in the election after the former candidate, Ibrahim Gabriel Itodo defected to the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN)
