The election which has been the subject of serious controversy is poised to be a battle among the leading the candidates. The much talked about governorship election in Ondo state is currently ongoing on Saturday, November 26. Top four candidates are vying on the platforms of the All Progressives Congress, Peoples Democratic Party, Alliance for Democracy and Social Democratic Party. This election is certainly a battle of the titans? The leading candidates above are locked in a Battle of the Titans A contentious primary
The candidates for the election have earlier slugged it out in a debate. But nothing differentiates this election from the others but for the crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party which pitched the Eyitayo Jegede camp against the Jimoh Ibrahim camp of the party. Both camps had been dancing to the tunes of the much bigger and influential factions.
Both candidates belonged to different factions of the party. Mr Jegede, who is thought to be sponsored by the incumbent governor, Olusegun Mimiko, belonged to the Makarfi faction while Mr. Ibrahim was of the Sherrif faction. In the end, it took a judgement of the Supreme Court to knock off Jimoh Ibrahim and confirmed Jegede as the party’s candidate. Who will the election? In this contentious election, it can be said that all the contestants are ‘grudge candidates’.
Akeredolu is thought not to be the anointed candidate of the powers that be in APC. But a faction in the party favours his emergence. Olusola Oke of the AD left APC because of ‘perceived’ injustice against him in the equally contentious APC primary while Segun Agunloye is more of an outsider. After much controversy though, the election is underway but like every election, the candidates are already raising allegations of bias against INEC.
