Oyegun: My Position Not Under Threat

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie- Oyegun, has appealed to the media to stop speculating about his removal or “easing out” as helmsman of the party to pave way for new leadership.
Oyegun said he remained the national chairman of the party and that his position was not under any threat.

It’s not clear how potent his claim is, considering the myriad of problems bedeviling the APC, including power tussle among its founding leaders, poor finances, President Buhari’s disposition to the party, and lack of adequate compensation for members that worked for the party’s success.
Oyegun said he went on a well-deserved rest for 10 days and had fully resumed. Prior to his departure, there were insinuations that he may not return.
However, when he resumed work at the party’s national headquarters, yesterday, Oyegun said his major task is winning this weekend’s rerun National Assembly and the Rivers State House of Assembly elections.
He said the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) would meet on March 24, adding that it would be preceded by the meetings of the party’s National Caucus and Board of Trustees (BoT) on March 21and 22 respectively.
Daily Trust learnt that the party’s BoT, whose constitution had been delayed due to internal strife, might be finally resolved next week.
The first interim national chairman of the party, Chief Bisi Akande, is likely to emerge as the BoT chairman.
It was gathered that Akande has the support of the APC leader, Sen. Bola Tinubu, though other leaders of the party, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar equally nurse the hope of emerging as the BoT chairman.
Other sources said Buhari may also showcase a different person for the BoT chairmanship, all in an effort to reposition the party ahead of the 2019 elections.
Oyegun also said all arrangements had been concluded to conduct congresses through which a substantive APC national publicity secretary to succeed Alhaji Lai Mohammed would emerge.
“In fact, the issue is getting somebody that can be as close as possible to the outstanding performance of the present Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed.
“That has been the issue. As a matter of fact, if it means making adjustments, somebody who is good is priority number one and you can make adjustments subsequently.
“I’m glad to be back. I told you I was going on a break because I needed it. I’ve had a good break, I’ve had a bit of rest and I’m back to the office,” he said.
