Senate Agrees To Motion Of 5 Years Jail Term And N5m Fine For Any R@pist

Yesterday, 27th October, 2016, the Senate agreed and adopted the option of 5-years and N5 million penalties for anyone who engages in sexual harassment in the country.

This resolution followed a report by the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters. Sexual Harassment in Tertiary Education Institution Bill. (SB. 262).

Speaking on the bill, Senator David Umaru said that the bill was appropriate and has elicited wide support from Senators, Stakeholders and Nigerians as a whole.

While Senate leader Ali Ndume proposed  7-years penalty, Senator Ben Murray Bruce (Bayelsa) proposed 10 years penalty, before the Senate unanimously resolved at 5-years and N5 million penalty.

“Penalty should be increased to 7years, the amount is only an attempt to stop harassment” – Ali Ndume said, as Ben Bruce added that “Rape is the number one crime in Lagos, harassment is a serious issue, it leads to rape. I propose 10years”.
