Fifteen persons on Saturday morning escaped death after the boat they were travelling in capsized at Grimaldi port close to Tin-Can Island bridge by Coconut bus stop, Apapa, Lagos.
Daily Trust learnt that the wooden boat was carrying 13 passengers, the operator and his boy when the accident happened.
All 15 passengers onboard were rescued by local divers, but the driver of the boat sustained minor injury.
The incident was said to have been caused by a bigger boat which caused heavy wave that destabilized the wooden boat, causing it to lose control and capsized.
The bost was said to be coming from Ibeshi and was heading to coconut when it ran into the wave created by the approaching bigger boat.
Most of the passengers were said to be traders who were on their way to Liverpool area of Apapa.
Ibrahim Farinloye, Public Relations Officer of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in the South West Region, who confirmed the incident said the driver of the boat was treated and allowed to go.
“A wooden boat capsized at Grimaldi port close to Tin-Can bus stop, near Niger Dockyard and few metres from the Jetty with 15 people on board.
“All have been rescued alive and the driver of the boat was the only one who sustained injury.”
