The distribution manager of an electric outfit in Ibadan was brutally beaten by soldiers over power failure.
The Distribution Manager of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), Sub Station of the Olumo Business Hub, Salau Adekunle, was at the receiving end as six soldiers, attached to the 35 Artillery Brigade, Alamala Barracks, Abeokuta, Ogun State, allegedly led by a Major, invaded the facility and gave him the beating of his life owing to the poor supply of electricity to the military barracks.
It was gathered that workers at the substation had to run for their dear lives as the angry soldiers stormed the office with horsewhips with which they flogged anyone within sight.
Adekunle who could not run fast enough, was reportedly cornered by the soldiers who descended on him and beat him blue black. The military officers’ anger, according to witnesses, was the incessant black out they have been getting and with no hope of a change, they took out their anger on staff of the company.
Speaking to newsmen on his ordeal, Adekunle said:
“They told me to get up and without explanation, they started beating me. They complained that they did not get supply regularly, but it is not our fault.
They said they would be the ones to determine the number of hours they want power. We told them it was not possible, but they didn’t want to listen.”
Another official of the IBEDC who was affected by the invasion of the soldiers, said they had been living in fear since the incident happened, amidst threats from the soldiers they they would be killed if the electricity situation does not improve.
“They said it would not be threats again, but killing. Major Musa said he would send soldiers we don’t know. We spoke out because we cannot wait for them to kill us.”
Do you think the soldiers did the right thing?
