The Chief of Defence Staff, General Gabriel Olonisakin, has sought additional assistance from Pakistan to help degrade the capacity of insurgents in the Northeast.
He appealed for assistance in the areas of staff development and capabilities against Improvise Explosive Devices (IEDs)
Olonisakin made this call at the Defence Headquarters during a courtesy call by the Pakistan High Commissioner to Nigeria, Lieutenant General Agher Farooq.
He said such assistance would be in addition to Pakistani’s supply of military equipment since the inception of insurgency in the country.
Olonisakin said with both countries sharing similarities in history and problems around insurgency, the Nigerian military would benefit from Pakistani’s experiences.
The Chief of Defence Staff noted counter-insurgency was a long drawn operation.
Thus, he said, the military would continue to interface with friendly and allied nations to ensure that the military get the required equipment.
Farooq commended the Nigerian government and the military for their approach in the fight against terrorism and insurgency.
The envoy said the aim of the visit was to bridge communication gap between the two countries and to reignite cordial cooperation.
