Gunmen Invade Lagos Community, Kill One During Protest

The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of three armed hoodlums who shot at protesting residents of Isiu community in
Ikorodu-North Local Council Development Area of the State.

The residents were protesting the forceful takeover of their farmlands by some hoodlums when the incident occurred, the Punch reports.

The incident that happened at the weekend left one Jelili Hassan, the manager of a block industry with severe bullet injuries and a certain man from the Hausa community in the area was shot dead.

Confirming the death, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Dolapo Bamdos, said “policemen from the Area N Command intervened and arrested three suspects.

“The case has been transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigation, Yaba, with three suspects for further investigation.”

According to the report, the hoodlums were led by three men, identified as Jimoh, Alhaji Soro Alabi and Alhaji Mutairu Owoeye.

Narrating what led to the incident, the Chairman, Isiu-Eweye Development Association, Opeyemi Taiwo, said: “The community held the protest to express grievance over the activities of the hoodlums.

“The government had neglected us.

“Last Friday, we got fed up with the activities of the hoodlums and we embarked on a protest to call for government’s help. The hoodlums came and attacked the protesters.

“The police intervened and the hoodlums took to their heels. But in the course of the fracas, Hassan, who moulds blocks in the community, sustained gunshot injuries.

“That evening, the hoodlums returned and there was another confrontation. That was when the Hausa man was shot dead.”

A community leader, Alice Raji, said economic activities had been grounded in the community, adding that their activities have destroyed economic activities in this community.

“This community used to be the largest producer of kolanuts, coconuts and oranges due to the vast land we have. But now, we can no longer go to our farms because of the thugs. Everybody is afraid and people have started fleeing their homes.”
