Parents of Ese Oruru, the 14-year-old minor allegedly abducted in Bayelsa and forced into marriage in Kano, on Monday lamented her absence from school. They said they were no longer comfortable with her continuous stay in police protective custody, which they described as uncomfortable for a nursing mother and her baby.

Today, the Federal High Court sitting in Yenagoa adjourned Ese’s case to December 8, but the parents described as ironic, denying their daughter her freedom through protective custody while the accused person, Yunusa, roamed the streets on bail.

They insisted that their daughter had been denied freedom under the guise of protection. They complained that Ese and her baby were not properly catered for in their protective custody since she gave birth to a baby girl on May 25, 2016.

Her father, Charles Oruru, said he was sad that her daughter and the new baby were confined in the officers’ mess. He lamented that Ese was supposed to be in school adding that her daughter had lost a school year following the saga.

He said:

“My daughter has been yearning and even crying to go back to school. I am begging the Delta State Government, Nigeria and the world at large to come to our aide.

Nowadays without education one is going to nowhere, so she is not doing anything in their custody, while the accused move freely and she is suffering there.”

Also, speaking, her mother, Rose, said her daughter lacked the proper care expected of a nursing mother. She said the expected psychological attention and nutritional care available in homely environment were missing at the police mess.

She said:

“We are just abandoned in a room that we are not even allowed to go out. We stay with our trash bin which is smelling. We and the new born baby are compelled to breathe the offensive smell.

So the world should note that we are being marginalise for no reason, as the boy Yunusa is still owing me some money after taken my daughter to Kano to impregnate her for me.”ese6
