The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ife Central state constituency, Dipo Eluwole, has won the bye-election conducted to fill the vacant seat at the Osun State House of Assembly.
The bye-election was conducted on Saturday but the Independent National Electoral Commission declared the poll inconclusive because results from two polling units were cancelled and a rerun election was conducted on Sunday.
The PDP candidate scored 5,504 votes at the end, as the candidate of the Accord Party, Olusegun Fanibe, came second with 4,790 votes while the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Tilewa Sijuwade, came third with 4,587 votes.
With the victory, the PDP retains the two seats it had earlier won during the general elections in 2015.
The seat became vacant following the death of the Minority Leader, Mr. Oladejo Makinde, of the PDP on December 27,2015.
Meanwhile, the PDP has urged the police to reveal the identities of the hoodlums arrested during the Saturday poll.
The spokesperson for the party, Mr. Diran Odeyemi, said this in a statement in Osogbo on Sunday.
The party also commended the people of Ife Central for their peaceful conduct and the support given to the PDP during the poll.
The statement read, “The PDP could not have attempted to disrupt an election it was winning so convincingly. Even when it lost election, it never fomented trouble. We are peace lovers.
“We expect the police leadership to deal decisively with those arrested over attempt to disrupt polls on Saturday. First, they should be paraded and their sponsors unmasked and dragged before the court for prosecution.
“This is important because 2018 election is around the corner and the sinking party will want to do everything to stay afloat. The attempt to snatch ballot boxes, we believe, was a dress rehearsal for what the sinking party may have in stock for 2018.”
