Following the compulsory one year NYSC posting for Nigerian graduates and in the spirit of Valentine, some corp members serving in Rivers state, have decided to show their students the real meaning of Valentine’s day.

February 14, is celebrated as a day of love, every year, world wide. On that day, gifts are exchanged between friends and loved ones. The day has been bastardized as a traditional day of ‘fun, debauchery and recklessness’ by some people.

The corp members serving in Comprehensive secondary school, Oproama, in Rivers state, decided to show their students that valentine’s day is not entirely about what they may think is the norm. They held a mini-gathering of corp member, staff and students. They had an awareness session, where a Jss2 female student was called out and asked who she would show love on valentine’s day, and she pointed at an SS3 male student.

When asked how she would show love to the boy, she reportedly said they would go swimming together, and also share a bath. According to reports, the entire hall erupted in laughter, because nobody thought she would actually be bold enough to say “we’ll bath together”. That was really what she thought the day was about.

These corp members set out to correct that impression in the minds of the young students and her likes. They seized the opportunity to teach the students to steer clear of sexual activities, as that could hamper the plans they have for their future.

The corp members each wore something with a ‘touch of red’.

In the words of the corp member who sent in the report: “As a corp member, I think this is the best valentine we can celebrate with our students. We have been able to enlighten them, and i believe they have learnt so many things.”
