There was commotion on Saturday on the Abbatoir Road, in the Agege area of Lagos State after a trailer driver, identified as Emmanuel George, crushed a tricycle passenger to death.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the victim, Isa Sanni, was among three passengers in the tricycle, who were involved in the accident.
He was said to have fallen off the tricycle onto the road and was crushed to death by the front tyres of the trailer.
An official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, who witnessed the incident, said a mob almost lynched the driver, but for the intervention of policemen from the Elere division.
He said the incident happened around 2pm.
He said, “There were two vehicles involved in the accident – a trailer, with number plate, LSR 615 XB, and a tricycle, with number plate, GGE 393 QC.
“The trailer was coming from the Abule Egba area and heading towards the Total area, while the tricycle rider, who had three passengers, rode out from an access road onto the highway.
“The rider of the tricycle ran into the path of the trailer, which hit it. The victim fell onto the road in the process and as he struggled to get out, the trailer’s tyres climbed his head.
“The trailer driver was unaware of the accident, until he heard the noise that somebody had been killed.”
The witness said the mob descended on the driver, adding that his vehicle was also vandalised in the process.
He said attempts by LASTMA to tow away the truck from the road were frustrated by the mob that wanted to burn it.
“There were people everywhere and it took the intervention of the police to prevent a total breakdown of law and order. The deceased’s family members later showed up,” he added.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, while confirming the incident, said the remains of the deceased had been deposited in a morgue.
She added that the suspect, George, had been arrested.
She said, “The accident happened around 2pm on Saturday and our men from the Elere division responded to it. We discovered that the driver of the truck, who works with a firm, CY Inc Ltd, Ijanikin, hit the tricycle in the Nitel area, on the Abattoir Road.
“Sanni, who is aged 30 years, died on the spot and we have taken his corpse to the morgue of a general hospital in the state for autopsy.”
