Ibadan – Less than a week after he accused federal lawmakers of profligacy, former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Monday came hard on governors, reports Sun.
Obasanjo accused the governors of living like emperiors and rendering public institutions useless and irrelevant.
He also accused them of diverting funds meant for councils, while the third tier of government has become personal estate of the governors.
He said many governors have refused to conduct local government elections since they assumed office and operate joint accounts with the councils such that paltry allocations usually get to the councils.
Obasanjo, who spoke while chairing the inaugural conference organised by the Ibadan School of Government and Public Policy, ISGPP, warned that the current fight against corruption may not achieve much unless those in the position of authority are ready to open themselves to public scrutiny.
