A church elder from Wheaton, Illinois, Stephen Stewart who was desperately seeking a husband for his ‘godly, gorgeous, virgin’ daughter, decided to advertise her, The Daily Beast reports.
Even more awkwardly, he decided to place the ad in the jobs section of evangelical christian publication Christianity Today. He even linked to his daughter Rachel’s blog so applicants could find out a bit more about their potential spouse.
While she’s since made her blog private, 26-year-old Rachel initially seemed amused by the ad, writing in a (now deleted) blog post: ‘At least it’s appropriate they placed it in the Employment Opportunities section, because putting up with this father-in-law’s shenanigans is a full time job, without any paid vacation.’
Having been alerted to the ad in the March issue by followers on her blog, Rachel said she gave dad Stephen Stewart a quick call.
She wrote: ‘His response was revelatory, “One second. Let me close my door.” Then came his unapologetic admonition about the entire thing that concluded with him reading it to me. Impressed, but not surprised, I laughed and then hung up.’
Well, he did say she had a good sense of humour.
Meanwhile, Christianity Today has apologised for the ad. Mark Galli, editor-in-chief acknowledged the slightly horrified reaction online, saying the ad ‘has been rightly seen as demeaning and in poor taste.’
He also said they’d screen ads more thoroughly in future, telling the Daily Beast: ‘We want everything in our magazine to reflect beautiful orthodoxy, and this ad did not.
‘We have taken a hard look at our ad review process, made some changes, and we can assure our readers that no ad like this will appear again.’
Rachel, however, says she isn’t angry or embarrassed by her dad’s actions, just slightly worried for the future.‘I’m just nervous if this doesn’t work out, next I’ll find my face plastered on a billboard,’ she wrote.
