A student has been reported to have jumped from a high school window at the second floor in order to skip a test. The incident involving a female student in Asbury Park High School happened on Wednesday in New Jersey, USA.
Officer Michael Casey, spokesman for the Asbury Park Police Department, said the 15-year-old student leaped from a second-floor window at the high school at 8:44 a.m. local time because she didn’t want to take a test.
The teen was taken to the hospital for treatment for a broken ankle and for an evaluation, he added.
School officials said the high school was conducting PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test) on Wednesday for freshman, sophomores and juniors, and that there was a delayed opening for seniors.
The student who jumped is a sophomore who arrived at school around before 7:47 a.m. and reported to homeroom, according to school officials.
They said that rather than go to her assigned testing location, she went to the second-floor ladies bathroom on the building’s east side and climbed out of the window in an effort to leave the building.
The student fell to the ground, and yelled for help, the officials added.
Nurses from the school and a neighbouring school were said to have attended to her until emergency services arrived.
The student was later transported to a medical centre for treatment and evaluation.
“It’s unfortunate that one of our students took extreme measures to exit the building, which resulted in her being injured,” Superintendent Lamont Repollet said.
“Our priority is to have a safe learning environment where we take the safety and security of all of our students very seriously.“
He also added that counsellors would be made available to staff and students who may have been affected.
