Unemployed Man Arraign For Attempted Car Theft


An unemployed man, Ahmed Iliya, was on Thursday arraigned before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos State, for allegedly attempting to steal a Volkswagen Golf car.

The accused, whose address is unknown, is facing a one count charge of stealing.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Innocent Uko, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Jan. 30 around 9.10 pm at Magbon Bus stop in Badagry.

Uko said that the accused made an attempt to steal the car belonging to one Joseph Ebele by pretending to be a passenger.

“The accused entered the car and acted like a passenger and when they got to a dark spot at Magbon, he tried to snatch the vehicle from the owner.

“The owner, who happened to be a very strong man, overpowered the accused and he was apprehended,’’ he said.

Uko said that the offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.

The counsel to the accused, Mr Olumide Akano, pleaded with the court to grant the accused bail.

Akano said that the offence is a bail able one.

The Magistrate, Mr Abiodun Etti, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N200, 000 and a surety in like sum.

Etti said that the surety must show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

He adjourned the case till March 2 for further hearing.
