The 78-year old Uzbek President, Islam Karimov has died after suffering from a stroke, Reuters reports.
The veteran leader, who had dominated the ex-Soviet nation for 25 years, had been in hospital since Saturday.
A statement issued earlier on a government website had said: “Dear compatriots, it is with a very heavy heart that we inform you that yesterday the condition of our president deteriorated sharply and, according to doctors, it is evaluated as critical.”
Karimov did not designate a successor and analysts say the transition of power is likely to be decided behind closed doors by a small group of senior officials and family members.
