He has rapidly become the most wanted footballer in Europe, but Euro 2016 golden boot winner Antoine Griezmann is not interested in leaving Atletico Madrid. Unless Diego Simeone leaves, that is.
Griezmann was strongly linked with Paris Saint-Germain throughout the Summer, following another excellent season for the ‘Rojiblancos’ and a stellar European Championships, yet opted to remain in the Spanish capital rather than chance his arm elsewhere on the continent.
Following Manchester United’s extravagant Summer spending, which included breaking the world transfer record when they spent £89m on Paul Pogba, it is believed Jose Mourinho wants the Old Trafford hierarchy to sanction a similar sized moved for Griezmann, next Summer. Griezmann, though, is uninterested in moving anywhere unless Atleti manager Diego Simeone decides to call it a day at the Vicente Calderon.
Speaking to Telefoot, Griezmann said:
“The only doubt would be if Simeone leaves for PSG or wherever.
“I called him before extending my contract and he confirmed to me that he was staying. I can learn a lot from him.
“PSG are not my goal at the moment. I’m happy in Spain.”
It is believed United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward will bow to Mourinho’s demands and look to spend close to £100m on securing Griezmann’s signature, next Summer if that’s what it takes to prise the forward away from Atleti.
