A Nigerian footballer playing his trade in the Tanzanian league, Seriki Muktar Adebayo, has been arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), for drug trafficking as he was boarding an Ethiopian Airline flight at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
The 26-year-old Adebayo, while confessing to his crimes, said he had no option but to engage in the business so as to survive as he could not get a better club that pays good money after his sojourn in the East African country.
According to the NDLEA, Adebayo was nabbed with 2.070kgs of heroin as he arrived the country from Mozambique.
In his confession to the operatives, he said:
“After a fruitless search for a football club in Tanzania for some months, I moved to Mozambique. Still, I could not secure a club.
In the process, I exhausted my money and was stranded. I was so disappointed and frustrated that I needed to return home. At that point, I had no choice than to agree to smuggle drugs. I regret my action.”
