A total of eight kids (four boys and four girls) from across the country got scholarship as winners in just concluded 2016 NGF/Awa Ibraheem Junior Golf Open Championship.
The 18 holes two-day event which held at the Ikeja Golf Club, Lagos from October 20-22 saw Lucky Onjefu of Otukpo emerging the new champion in the age 16-18 category boys with a gross score of 161.
In the girls’ category of age 16-18, Blessing Abdul also of David Mark Academy garnered 186 gross to win the for the first time.
However, in the age 13-15, 18 holes, Odey Alechenu of David Mark Academy, defended the title he won in the last edition amassing a gross of 164 to remain the champion; while his female counterpart, Victoria Atama also won with a gross of 193.
Invariably, Ikoyi Club kids came next to Otukpo in the trophy haul as Osiregbeme Egbakhumeh clinched the boys’ age 10-12 category.
Playing nine holes in two days, Egbakhume garnered 86 gross to lift the trophy, while Iyenebong Essien of IBB Club, Abuja won the girls category with a gross of 103.
In the infant category of age nine who played four holes in two days, Weng Davou from Jos won the boys category with a gross score of 41, while Naisha Nandal of Ikoyi Club won the girls’ category with 46 gross.
Hon. Jibril Nazifi, President of Nigeria Golf Federation (NGF), commenting on the event praised the kids for putting up good performance, just as he commended the sponsor (Alhaji Ibraheem) for maintaining the sponsorship.
However, the sponsor, Ibraheem used the occasion to cut his birthday cake as he commended the players and the organisers for a healthy competition.
