Slovenian Football Association has handed a seven-match ban to Marko Nikolic, Olimpija Ljubljana coach over a racial slur against Nigerian national Blessing Eleke, a welcome statement in the fight to stamp racism out of football.
The Football Association issued the ban, “because of clear racism,” the BBC reported.
The ban follows a public outcry that the team’s executive pussyfooted on the matter and treated Marko Nikolic with kid gloves.
Nikolic called the Nigerian player, Eleke a “black idiot” after he scored an equalizer but engaged in an elaborate celebration, which angered the coach.
The club president Milan Mandaric reportedly said the club would not take any tough action against Nikolic because, “the coach did not target the player’s race”.
