Ryan Crouser broke the Olympic record as he dominated the men’s shot final to win gold at Rio 2016.
The American 23-year-old was wonderfully consistent – clearing 21 metres with all six throws, four of which were good enough for gold – as he took the win with a best of 22.52m.
Compatriot Joe Kovacs claimed silver with 21.78m, while New Zealand’s Tomas Walsh earned bronze with 21.36m.
Crouser was relatively unknown before his victory at the US Olympic trials in July, where he again upset Kovacs to take victory.
He usurps Ulf Timmermann in the Olympic record books, with the East German’s 22.47m from Seoul 1988 finally surpassed in Brazil.
