Cristiano Ronaldo and Alvaro Morata scoring in the dying minutes to give Real Madrid a 2-1 win over Sporting Lisbon at the Bernabeu.
Ronaldo’s free-kick against his former club on 89 minutes cancelled out Bruno Cesar’s shock 48th-minute opener for Sporting.
But the defending champions were not finished as they earned all three points by scoring in five minutes of added time with a Morata header enough to sicken Sporting.
Real took their time to respond to going behind with Ronaldo missing a fine chance to level when he struck the near post from a couple of yards out.
Ronaldo denied his Portuguese boyhood club, and chose not to wildly celebrate his free-kick.
We didn’t start the game well but Real Madrid are famous for comebacks like these and we leave here very happy,” said Morata.
Real Madrid are bidding to become the first side to retain the Champions League since the modern inception of the tournament in 1992.
