Manchester City of England and Athletico Madrid of Spain are both through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League. For the first time after a 0-0 draw with Dynamo Kyiv yesterday at the Etihad Stadium. The goalless second leg was enough for City, who triumphed 3-1 in Ukraine in the first game between the sides, to progress to the last eight.
First-half injuries suffered by centre-backs Vincent Kompany and Nicolas Otamendi took the gloss off City’s success somewhat, but Manuel Pellegrini will be delighted to have guided the club beyond the first knock-out round in his final season at the helm.
Kompany appeared to suffer yet another muscle injury six minutes into the game. Making only his 18th start in all competitions this season, he appeared to reach for his hamstring when turning to guard the ball from Oleg Gusev.
City then lost Otamendi in the 24th minute to add to their injury problems.
Andriy Yarmolenko shot tamely at Joe Hart in the 64th minute and Toure followed that up with a shot of his own straight at Oleksandr Shovkovskiy.
City will be enjoying all the accolade, as they prepare for their quarter-final opponent.
On its part, Athletico Madrid went through after a gruelsome 8-7 penalty kick after play which went in to extra time finished 0-0.
The first-leg played in Holland had ended 0-0 also.
