David Ospina will start in goal for the match at Emirates Stadium and, with Olivier Giroud missing out through suspension, Alexis Sanchez looks set to continue in attack
The Switzerland international scored in two consecutive games against Hull City and Nottingham Forest over the past fortnight but manager Arsene Wenger has continued with his preferred partnership of Francis Coquelin and Santi Cazorla in midfield.
However, Coquelin sustained a knee injury during the first half of Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Chelsea at the weekend and is expected to be on the sidelines for at least a month – paving the way for Xhaka to break into the starting XI in the coming games.
Xhaka will also come up against his older brother Taulant, who he faced at Euro 2016 when Switzerland played Albania, while another ex-Basel player in Mohamed Elneny could come in for Cazorla if Wenger decides to rotate in midfield.
Colombian keeper David Ospina will continue in goal as part of his arrangement with Wenger to play all Champions League group stage games this season and Lucas Perez is also likely to feature, but Olivier Giroud misses out through suspension.
Marc Janko has scored three goals in four appearances for Basel in the Swiss Super League this season and remains a potent goal threat for the away side.
